Hello, 2008

Vacation’s been fun, but I’m ready to get back to warmer climes. As fun as it is to pile on four layers of clothes to get to the grocery store, it’ll be nice to prepare myself for the brutal mid-winter weather by maybe throwing on a light jacket.

We’re flying out tomorrow behind that giant storm that’s on its way from California, so I’m glad there’s lots of football* on tonight that I can watch to keep myself distracted. The biggest challenge will probably be getting from up in the mountains, where all the weather is, to Denver, where the daily high is usually above freezing.

I’m ready to see my puppy again. I called on New Year’s Eve to check on him, and he seemed to be adjusting well. Too well, perhaps. He’d already taken to following his vacation-mama around, sitting on her lap. He’d also taken command of the house, herding all three cats into a bedroom, to the point that their mom had to relocate their food so they wouldn’t have to venture out and deal with Sammy scampering up to challenge them. I hope he remembers who I am.**

I’m decidedly not looking forward to remembering that I still have law schools to apply to and an undergrad degree to earn. I get to dig through my mailbox and find out how many of my petitions have gone through. My guess is two, of the eight or nine I turned in three weeks ago.

*Speaking of which, have y’all seen that Subway commercial? The one where the ref’s like, “I totally blew that call. In fact, it wasn’t even close. But I’ll penalize the other team. For no good reason. In the second half. To even things up.” I love that one. My brother thinks it’s worthy of the Super Bowl, and I agree.

** Unlike my return from two weeks in Europe last summer, when he barked and growled for a whole minute before he’d even let me pet him. I guess he was angry.
