Bits of updates
Sections today, because this is really several posts rolled into one.

Let’s start with some spectacular news. My friend Sandra from all the way back in elementary/middle school, whom I haven’t talked to in years, found my blog a while back. She read my post about Sammy having to stay in a kennel over New Year’s and generously offered him a spot at her mom and brother’s house. Hooray! Y’all are awesome, seriously. Samson will be so much happier in a real, comfy house with people who care about him, and his mommy will sleep easier, too.

I had that dizziness test on Tuesday. It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, even the water bit. I followed a bunch of dots on a light board, sat up and lay down quickly, had air puffed into my ears, and had each of my ears alternately filled with hot and cold water, all with electrodes attached around my eyes.
The strongest vertigo I got was when the technician piped cold water into one ear. Lying down with my eyes closed, I distinctly felt as though I were rolling over and over, to the point where I gripped the table because, you know, I didn’t have a seatbelt or anything.
During the induced dizzy spells, I had to perform different verbal tasks, like naming cities or countries beginning with each letter of the alphabet, to evaluate whether the dizziness affected my thinking. The technician said I got through the girls’ names faster than anyone she’d ever seen in her three years there. What can I say? Give me a standardized test, and I’ll dominate it. I may not be the life of the party, but I am REALLY GOOD at the alphabet.

We’ve passed one landmark in the grad school application process: John mailed off all his UT materials today (they’re due Friday). He’s spent the better part of the last week wrestling with his personal statement, perfecting his resume, and filling out forms. I helped where I could, mostly by finessing the language in the personal statement, because I might just love copyediting EVEN MORE than I love the alphabet. Yum.
His other apps aren’t due until mid-January, but he wants to finish them all next week, now that all the hard work (composing and editing that darn essay) is done. My law school apps don’t start coming due until February, so I’m saving most of that mess for after the holidays; all I’ve done so far is check on deadlines and talk to my recommenders.

* It’s properly capitalized “TiVo,” isn’t it? But this is not a TiVo-brand tivo. I predict “tivo” will become an ordinary lower-case word much faster than xerox, kleenex, polaroid, coke, and the like. What’s the word for those, again? Something to do with naming, like “nymogram” or something? Morphonym? No. Bah.
