Overheard
I’m sitting at the teahouse in a small room with four tables, each seating a single laptop user. The only access to the back room is through this one, so there’s a regular flow of traffic. One guy walking through stops and approaches the girl sitting across from me.
Guy: Hey, do you go to UH?
Girl, removing earbud: What?
Guy: Do you go to UH? Because you look familiar. I think I’ve seen you walking around campus.
Girl: Oh, yeah.
Guy: Are you taking summer classes?
Girl: Yeah.
[silence]
Guy: Okay, cool, cool. [walks off]
An hour later, Guy nervously pops back in.
Guy: So, what’s your name?
Girl: [gives name]
Guy: What?
Girl: [repeats it]
Guy: Oh, okay, cool.
[pause]
Guy: Do you wanna hang out?
Girl: No, sorry, I have to study.
Guy: I don’t mean right now. Like, do you wanna go hang out sometime later?
Girl: Um…
Guy: See, I think you’re cute, and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out.
Girl: Um, no.
Guy: What?
Girl: No thanks, sorry.
Guy: Do you…do you wanna go, like, hang out sometime? You know, if you have free time.
Girl: No, I don’t think so.
[pause]
Guy: Oh, okay. Well…I’ll see you around, then.
It was painful, PAINFUL to listen to, I tell you. There’s a lot of summer left, too—plenty of time for them to run into each other at school…

So I’m trying to meet more people in my locale, and life is tough when you’re not in school anymore. Even without the benefit of an academic setting, I’d like to think I’m not as awkward as this guy…

Wow, thats special. But yeah, Paul and I were talking about this last night…how do we make friends now that we aren’t in school? At least we aren’t also trying to find dates. For the last month my best hang out/shopping girlfriends have been pauls mom and grandmother! They are cool and all but…um…friends?

It seems that “cute” isn’t a good word. I envy this guy, though. He just tried… Maybe if… “Hey, again”; “My name is Guy”; “So, what’s your name?”; …; “See, I talked with my friends Jen, Sylvia, Bob, Jack, Hannah, Ursula and Jake, and I was wondering if you and some of your friends wanted to hang out someday”; …
