I’m an idiot

There’s a conference in Austin this week—South by Southwest. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. It’s huge.

The conference/festival is really three conventions in one: Film, Music, and Interactive. I first heard about SXSW Interactive last year, when a few high-profile bloggers came home and blogged about how much fun they’d had there. (I could’ve sworn I posted something about this last year, but apparently I didn’t.) I thought it sounded super-spiffy and vaguely resolved to go in 2007 because Austin is only three hours away and how could I miss out on that?

The 2007 conference is this week, concurrent with my Spring Break. Since I have no major plans for break, I decided to go. I wouldn’t contribute anything to the conference and don’t know anyone else who’s going, but I figured I’d get a kick out of seeing the panels and interactive sessions live and milling about with famous interwebby people, shyness be damned.

I was going to drive out to Austin Tuesday morning, when I THOUGHT the conference started, and figure out accommodations when I got there. When I went to register this morning, however, I was surprised to find that the conference actually started on FRIDAY. As in last Friday. It ends on Tuesday.

!!!

Somehow I had the dates March 13–15 stuck in my head, though I have yet to figure out how this happened, as they appear NOWHERE on the site.

I’ve resigned myself to not going. They don’t sell day passes, and $250 plus gas and a hotel seems a lot to pay for two-ish days of a five-day conference. Most of the interactive sessions and all of the panels will be podcast, so most of what I’ll be missing is the personal interaction, which (I’m trying to convince myself) wouldn’t be significant anyway.

I will be at SXSW 2008. Y’all hold me to this, mkay? Don’t let me back out next year, through idiocy or otherwise.

Funny how you call yourself an idiot. I do that too, sometimes. I guess it’s the English title of this blog that makes me laugh. Yet, your style of ‘thinking’/writing/speaking makes me laugh a lot. And that is ment to be a compliment :-)

But…. whát is SXSW? Is it something unknown to out little Dutch country or am I just stupid now…. :P

    Groetjes,

    Tat
