They’re ba-aaaaaaack

Starbucks’ chocolate cupcakes, that is.

The attack of these frosted monsters seems to be an annual thing; I have strong memories of cupcakes associated with events I can date definitively to February and March of 2006. I could look up the precise dates I blogged about last year’s craze, but really I’ve been doing most of the work around here, and I think it’s time you started pulling your own weight. Geez.

The cakethings have returned in the same approximate form, with a few minor substitutions. Whereas the frosting on last year’s cupcakes was topped with chocolate flakes, this year the frosting is topped with—what else?—more frosting. And a few white chocolate flakes for effect. The vanilla version (which I only eat when the chocolates are sold out, as they are tonight) has replaced its pure white frosting dipped in white and yellow sprinkles with vanilla bean-flecked frosting ringed with what seems to be raw cane sugar*.

The cupcakes are also a bit smaller. I’m not sure if they cost less, and they might even cost more. I’d put good money on the latter. More than I already am**, I mean.

The Starbucks recipe-tinkerers will be delighted to hear that the addictive quality of their cupcakes was not contained entirely in the oh-so-2006 chocolate flakes. As near as I can tell, the cupcakes were released this morning; I just finished my second one. Congratulations! World domination will be yours any day n—oh, right. Been there done that.

* You know, the sugar that’s brownish with really big grains. I don’t know the real name for it.

** I cannot make these two sentences parallel (”I already am put”). I’ve tried. Suggestions are welcome.

After watching your vids for months I finally got around to checking out your blog. Very nice. Love the tone, the topics and the…I don’t know…the sense of humor, I guess you’d call it. Just like your videos.

Heh heh, I do like to think I have a decent sense of humor sometimes. Thanks for the kind words, Tom.

granular sugar? raw cane works though :-) Bad timing for starbucks to come out with chocolate cupcakes during lent. Hmm, marketing and calendar planning clash.

hehe- i just had one of those chocolate chocolate cupcakes today- it was my “lunch”
and yes- they’ve gotten smaller.. and im sure they’re more expensive. it would be consistent with the way of things.

**More than I already would (put). You see, the I’d there is really “I would”…

No. The money that I pay for cupcakes isn’t hypothetical; it’s an “am paying,” not a “would pay.”

“I would put more than I would put” makes no sense.
