When you absent-mindedly leave the dome light in your car on when you park it for the night, living with a critter who enjoys a trot around the parking lot every couple hours gives you at least two more chances to notice and turn it off, thereby avoiding being horribly late to the first session of a new class you’re teaching at 10:00 the next morning.
