Shannon apparenlty doesn't have any appliances... a fridge...washing machine/dryer..... or even lights... and charges her computer's batteries somewhere away from home. At least that's what that kind of bill would suggest...... i can only say what Natalie's already said - da-yum.

Day-um, that's incredible. If I, um, actually looked at my electric bills, I'm sure they'd be double or triple that. My parents' bill is several hundred dollars---for a whole house, yes, but still.

I just got my first electricity bill today ... $15 for the first month (plus a $20 service charge). Apparently I am using 5 kWh/day, which does not seem too bad.

@Jay: Gosh, that sounds so backwards---it's hotter during the day, silly! =P I guess it's different when you're not home and/or don't have a puppy to keep comfy. I usually switch my A/C off at night because I absolutely cannot sleep when I'm cold. What's more, if I do manage to fall asleep, it's quite difficult to convince myself to get out from under the covers the next, frigid morning.

@Shannon: Wow, I bet. I already get pretty hot just taking Sam on what's maybe a quarter-mile walk.

@Greg: Geez, are you my dad or something? I'm sure you're right---I'll have to balance the downsides of a few hours of humidity with the upsides of NOT FREEZING MY ASS OFF.

Natalie,

You should consider the effect not having ventilation will have on your apartment. If you don't have your AC on, with 100% humidity outside, you're also going to have 100% humidity inside. Which isn't good for the building structurally (not that renters care about that), but also for your furniture and electronics. Humidity also makes microbes happy.

I try to avoid turning on the air conditioner, but that is mostly because I am now paying bills and want to save money. It has been in the upper 90's quite a few times here, so I have had to turn the A/C on it. I find that I really need it after I have just walked a mile home during the hottest part of the day.
