Windfall

On school nights I usually look for any excuse not to go to bed—it’s dumb. Tonight, for once, this bad habit has turned out to be marginally useful. No longer able to justify any more time poking around on the interweb, I tried to postpone bedtime a few minutes longer by convincing myself that I needed to pay all my overdue bills RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE.

When I get bills in the mail, I usually follow a strict policy of not opening them, because I don’t like bills. (This of course leads to a great deal of unnecessary expense in the form of late fees. Waste, waste, waste.)

In the stack of unopened mail on my kitchen counter I found two sealed envelopes from my old cable company. I figured one would be a bill, and the other would be the same bill plus a huge late fee. But when I opened them up, they turned out to both be checks! For me! From the cable company! If this continues, I might be tempted to check my mail more than twice a month.

Any bets on whether I’ll get them to the bank before the 90-day expiration period runs out? (The first check is dated April 6, by the way.)
