Less with the selfishness already

Did I ever tell you that I’m getting a dog? Because I am. A dog or a cat. I need something small and warm that I can take care of and love and cuddle with.*

I’ve never had a pet bigger than a hamster, so I don’t know quite what I’m looking for, and this is a big-time, long-term sort of commitment, so I’d like to do it right.

I live in an yard-less apartment that would drive a big hairy galumpher of a hound crazy, so I need a small dog (or a cat), and I’d like one that’s low-key, not spastic or yippy, can sleep through the night, etc. I am *not* a high-strung person, so living with a nervous little dog would drive me nuts.

Right now I’m thinking dachshund or cat (I don’t know what varieties cats come in—they all look the same to me except for those weird nekkid ones). Anything else I should consider? Is *your* dog small and chill? Does it have puppies, or maybe brothers and sisters? Remember, cuteness counts.

* I’ve tried to reinterpret this sentence in a dirty and/or humorous way, but I got nothin’. Anybody?

i’m not sure how calm a weiner dog is; go invade the pet section of B&N for a day and read up; there should be a book that talks about different breeds of dogs or cats.
never had a cat, but from what i understand, you litter train them and they kinda take care of themselves. They’re more independent-minded, but u dont need to take them out on walks. but then there’s claws…. but puppies chew… but.. eh- these are all things to think about :-)

jack russell terrier - incredibly cute and harmless…don’t have one, but I saw one on campus the other day…it’s soooo cute!!! :)

Oh get a cat!!! Go to the humane society and adopt one of the adult cats. (Everybody adopts the kittens and that means the adult cats get killed). It’s such a good cause….and also the cat might already be declawed!

Yay! I knew this one would bring comments.

I’ve babysat dachshunds before, and yes, they really are good at sitting around and not being crazy. Barking at the mailman, yes; jerking awake and scrambling over my nearly-asleep body to get to the door when the icemaker dumps ice at 1 am, no.

Jack Russells, OTOH, are a big yes on both counts. Cute as all get out, but also spastic. My friend Toni has one, and she’s an awesome dog to *visit*, love her to death, but I couldn’t live with the high energy and wigging-out-ness all day every day.

Getting a cat is tempting because I wouldn’t have to take it out all the time. But then again, I could probably use a few extra walks a day.

I used to have a cat that I would take for “walks” when I was younger. I don’t think she liked it that much. It was cute though when she would try to sneak up on a bird or something, and the bell on her collar would make a noise and scare the bird away.

I vote cat. For cats, though, you have to decide how much hair you want to deal with. Longer haired cats might be softer (probably important for the cuddle factor), but they shed a lot. Brushing a cat for a few minutes that can be relaxing though if the cat likes it.

No yard? Then go with the cat. Simple as that. I’m a dog person, but you don’t want to have to take the dog on a full-fledged walk every time it decides it has to pee. Cats can just use a litter box. (Why don’t they have dog litter boxes?)

And dachshunds are cute, yes, but they tend to randomly pee on things when they get excited… or so I’ve read…

I think you have a boss with a dog that is becoming yours…

But if you’re going for the cuddle effect, men (or women…) work too… Actually, they’re all alot like lost puppies. And if you are lucky, you can find one that is toilet trained.

Yes, that’s the goal, but people are so complicated. I’ll start with a puppy and work my way up.
